Every year, the competition with proprietary software just keeps on getting harder. It doesn't help that our principal does not understand how our market works as well. It's all about the numbers and the worst of it is that the principal has no money for marketing.

Why do you care in what country your web server is hosted in? With the speed of the Internet, geographical location is almost irrelevant.
With the generally weak US dollar, a north American web hosting company might be competitive with a local hosting company. You might find better server infrastructure as well.
On the other hand, I don't believe that I'd want my web pages hosted in North Korea or Iran.
Last time I checked, which admittedly was about 1996 or so, the Gimp could record macros. Also, it has support for several different scripting languages, of which Python isn’t even the first.
Even though I use the commercial free version more… VirtualBox is my winner.
Well ASP.net only runs on Windows and that isn't free.
When it comes to PHP, it runs on about anything, including free OS's.
I am a PHP developer for a NASDAQ company, believe me, anything to do with microsoft has mad licensing fees. Start looking at an Internet connection license for MSSQL.
With all open source software, you can download the full source code and alter any piece of it you would like. You can in no way alter .net, and if you could you would be violating licensing.

firefox is okay, but kinda 2008. try srware iron. its also free/open source, but a google chrome clone. that means its faster, looks better by default and the feeling is slim and clean.
Difficult to pick favorites. There’s Blender, a 3D modelling and animation suite. For many simple programs I use Python, one of the more robust and user friendly programming languages around. And I use Maxima for some mathematics. Among the most important to me are screen and ssh (putty if on S60 or Windows), but I suppose those aren’t as relevant as the first introduction. In theory I think your proposal has merit. Rather than spend time and money on many different browsers, languages, etc and each works so-so, it seems logical to have just one of each and they work at or near 100% perfection. But in reality, the world of computing is not static and new innovations rely on competition. Even in-house competition to satisfy the needs of different consumers (Microsoft Office vs. Word vs. Groove vs. Visio vs. Project vs. InfoPath, etc. etc.)
Your theory could be applied to just about anything and the same can be said for why we have so many makes and models of computers, operating systems, cars, washing machines, sneakers, TVs, etc.

Open source? then definitely Java EE ! Java EE is an open framework by Sun Microsystems for delivering high end enterprise applications. Also, it's far more advanced than PHP and it has it's respect in the software market.
But Java is not easy and require some studying. But trust me, it will pay.
I am a ASP.NET web developer and I am extremely happy with it because I can do with ASP.NET what anyone can do with Java EE. Specially after the introduction of ASP.NET MVC. But I suggested Java EE because you wanted Free Source
